High School Science Fair Coach Grant

High School Science Fair Coach Grant- science teachers statewide can apply to receive support to mentor students to submit projects in climate change science to Intel ISEF affiliated regional science fairs in spring 2013. The Desert Research Institute has funding from NSF to provide support for 14 high school science teachers around the state! Application

Las Vegas High School FIRST Robotics Team 13th in the World!

Cimarron-Memorial High School Team 987 just competed in Las Angeles against 66 teams and won the regional. They also were awarded the Rockwell Automation Innovation in Control Award. The judges were amazed at their programs using many on-board sensors and controls to direct ball shooting without human intervention. They are on their way to the work finals in April in St. Louis. Let’s wish them lots of luck! And please note that they finished FOURTH IN THE WORLD last year! Contact Stephen Philpott for more information. 702-376-9859

Foundational Principles for a Nevada STEM Network

Thanks to a donation from Dorothy Lemelson, Gathering Genius, Inc. held a Summit “Design Studio” in November 2011. We were able to invite a small group representing various stakeholder organizations around the state to meet with Jan Morrison, Executive Director of TIES, to discuss and prepare for the summit. Ms. Morrison led the group in identifying some of Nevada’s challenges in STEM education and preparing for the summit.

In anticipation of the development in 2012 of a statewide STEM network of partners, the group created a draft set of STEM education principles that could be considered for adoption by Nevada STEM stakeholders and partners. This meeting also resulted in increased dialogue among stakeholders for increasing grant-seeking collaborations.

1. Ensure that STEM education is foundational for every Nevada student K-12, including
the underrepresented and minorities.

2. Meet the needs of Nevada’s employers in all sectors by providing a STEM-literate workforce.

3. Create and support a statewide STEM resource network to enhance collaboration among K-
12, higher education, business and industry, government, community organizations, parents, and students.

4. Provide students with opportunities to apply STEM knowledge in the real world to foster
creativity, critical thinking, collaboration, problem-solving, and entrepreneurship.

5. Educate policymakers on systemic reforms that can bolster/support quality STEM education practices.

6. Increase the pool of teachers skilled in science, technology, engineering and mathematics and who use
research-based best practices in their classrooms.

7. Promote transdisciplinary instruction, where teachers engage students in activities that use multiple
disciplines to increase student learning, interest and engagement.

8. Expand students’ access to rich and diverse experiences, starting in early childhood, that increase the
numbers of students skilled and interested in pursuing STEM jobs, degrees, and careers.

Google Science Fair – Entries Due by March 30th

The online Google Science Fair entries are due March 30. In addition to Google prizes, Scientific American is sponsoring a $50,000 Science in Action award “for a project that addresses a social, environmental, or health issue to make a practical difference in the lives of a group or community.” Google prizes include a trip to the Galapagos Islands with National Geographic Explorer, unique scholarships, and real-life work opportunities in science centers of excellence such as CERN in Switzerland!

DataWind Selling Tablet Computers to Students for Cheap

DataWind, a tech company backed by the Indian government, will be selling a $35 tablet computers to students. It runs on Google’s Android and has a 7 inch screen. Unfortunately, this is only available to those in India, but what an amazing technological step forward for the people of India!

What inspired you to start a company that focused on females in science?

I discovered that there were still significant societal stereotypes and peer-group pressure that start to affect girls in upper elementary school through middle school in such a way that they start to drift away from math and science. So I realized that there was a lot that could be gained by targeting that particular age.
